Venice: 18th Century View of the Grand Canal by Lovisa

$1,375.00

This is an early 18th century etching of the Grand Canal in Venice entitled "Veduta del Canal Grande dirimpetto la Pescaria di Rialto" by Domenico Lovisa, first published in 1720 in Venice in "Il Gran Teatro di Venezia" (The Great Panorama of Venice). It depicts acrobats performing apparently on a boat on the Grand Canal, creating a very high pyramid of men standing on the shoulders of those below them. Many people are watching from other boats, from terraces of an adjacent building in the background on the left and from a sidewalk in the foreground on the right. Additional gondola water taxis and boats for the transport of goods are also shown on the canal. There is a legend in the lower inscription region which identifies buildings and landmarks in the scene.

There are two other Lovisa etched scenes of Venice that are listed. A discount of 20% is available for purchase of a pair or all three of these prints, which would make for a striking display.

This excellent impression and detailed 18th century engraving is printed on thick, laid, chain-linked paper with wide margins. The sheet measures 16.5" high by 21" wide. There are scattered small faint spots, a tiny chip at the edge of the upper margin, some wrinkling in the upper corners, as well as remnants of a thin strip of hinging material along the upper edge of the verso. The print is otherwise in very good condition.

Domenico Lovisa (1690-1750) was an Italian engraver and publisher. His publication 'Il gran Teatro di Venezia, ovvero raccolta delle principali vedute e pitture che in essa si contengono', contained 122 topographical views of Venice. It was commissioned by a group of Venetian aristocrats who were proud of their city and may have been motivated by an interest in promoting commerce and tourism.
